The Practice of Living Purposefully

Being a somewhat avid reader, I frequently come across things that intrigue, inspire, and just generally get my brain cells fired up.  Nathaniel Branden writes in "The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem" that, "Of all the judgements we pass in life, none is as important as the one we pass on ourselves."  I must admit that I have not yet read this book so I can't give a review or even a quick synopsis.  However, if the quote is any indication then I may have to add it to my shelf or at the very least my Nook.

My gym, Lifetime Fitness, puts out a monthly publication called "Experience Life."  In it are tidbits of well-being from fitness and food to emotional well-being, stress reduction, etc..  It is here that I came across the quote.  And it made a whirlwind of the filed experiences and thoughts in my head.  As did the number 5 pillar entitled, "The Practice of Living Purposefully."  I thought I'd share some of these thoughts.

Branden says that living purposefully is using what we have to accomplish self-selected goals.  These goals can be anything from raising a family or building a business to research and problem solving or simply sustaining a happy relationship.  Some goals are those that deeply inspire you.  He emphasizes the word YOU because the goals aren't applicable to other people.  Then the question becomes, "If my goal is to have ________, what must I do" to make that happen and sustain it.

I encourage all of you to think about those things as they help to focus life in a big way.  It helps us line up our ideals, ethics, integrity, standards and beliefs with our personal value.  It's the natural way to follow up the resurrection of Christ, to be more like Him in our daily lives.  So, work hard at your relationships, work hard at being the best you can be for yourself.  And.....have a wonderfully Happy Easter.
