Gray Matters and Preventive Medicine

Did you know that some person memorized 303 random digits? (Courtesy of August's "Smithsonian" issue.)  Wow.  That's some memory.

Don't forget to check out the article in Monday's "The Oklahoman" about heartworm disease in pets -- who quoted yours truly.  Here's my plug --- it's soooooo important to have your pets on heartworm prevention ALL year around.   And while I'm talking about it.  It's soooo important to have your pet on flea and tick prevention ALL year around.  Just summer months doesn't cut it.  I can't tell you how many positive tests for fleas (which transmit tapeworms), tick-borne diseases like Ehrlichia canis, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, hookworms, roundworms, etc.  ALL of these are prevented by monthly year-round heartworm and flea and tick prevention.  And.....it's much less expensive to prevent these diseases than it is to treat them long-term.  And.....it is much safer for your pet.

Okay, I'm done.  Just don't forget!!  (OH, and don't be fooled into thinking that over-the-counter heartworm and flea and tick products are the same as those you get from your veterinarian.  1) although the active ingredient may be the same--the vehicle to get the ingredient in the body is different 2) having a relationship with your veterinarian allows you to get the best recommendations for your pet (not every product is recommended for every pet) and when or if the pet has a reaction or side effects to the product, your veterinarian will be the one you turn to.  3) If you take it upon yourself to buy these products without recommendations you won't know the science behind why the products MUST be used year-round for efficacy.

I really am done now.  Feel free to email me with questions or comments --or better yet...leave them on the blog.
