The Battle
It was last Saturday and a mighty team of Mustang Broncos galloped into Yukon High Schools gym to try their hand at placing in the year's second open wrestling tournament. Cody Canida, wrestling at 160 pounds draws the 1 seed first round. He builds himself up, puffing big breaths out as he paces on the mat before his match. A roll of the shoulders. Again. A dance move to get his feet going. He can do this.
He takes the mat. The other guy scores first. Cody scores next. This continues. The other guy draws down. Cody gives him a point. Cody starts down. He escapes. The score goes back and forth. And in the end Cody wins. Victory against the 1 seed. We cheer ceremoniously. We knew he could do it. This is going to be his tournament.
He gets ready for the next match. It's sure to be easier than the last. And this happens...
You'll see a couple of times that I am so engrossed in the match that the boys wrestle out of the my camera view. The injury to Cody's left leg is about 2/3rds of the way through....I haven't watched the end yet. I'm not sure what I say and I'm sure the camera turns off abruptly as I run downstairs to the mat.
I am happy to say the knee is improving and after a couple of days on crutches, icing, rest and anti-inflammatories we think it's only a strained medial collateral ligament and a bruised meniscus. We are hoping he will be back on the mat next week all healed up.
