Day 3: The Southwestern Chronicles

Day 3 found us in Sedona, Arizona. We decided to drive through Albuquerque, across the state line into Arizona and then decide where to stay once we got to Flagstaff. Sedona was a whim -- and we drove the curvy mountain road in the dark to the quaint little town lit up for Christmas. It wasn't until morning when we realized how beautiful the surroundings were. The red rock towered above us and the town was set down among mountains. It was planned that the bulk of the next day would be a tour of the Grand Canyon so our time in Sedona was limited, unfortunately. The two-hour drive to the Grand Canyon was full of anticipation since I hadn't been there ever before. Once you stand with that vast wonder of the world on three sides of you, the wind blowing your hair --- you feel something you've never felt before. You feel so small and you feel so in awe of that place.

We only visited the South Rim because it was December and the North Rim was closed. But again, we deviated from the plan and I got to witness the Grand Canyon at sunset and to acquire some amazing photographs. I can't wait to visit again and to actually do some exploring. It was ever so cold as you can see by the way we are bundled up!!!

After the Grand Canyon we drove back to Sedona, again in the dark. It was starting to be a theme. We ate at the Havelina Cantina -- and I had no idea that was a pig!!! The food was really, really good and we sat by the fireplace. After the chicken enchiladas with a chocolate mole sauce that was way, way too much to eat and an amazing mango margarita it was time to get ready for a moderate drive into Nevada for the Equine Practitioners conference the following day.

Check back for notes on the rest of the journey!
