T5: Alum Cave Bluffs Trail

After 1.7 miles up on the Appalachian Trail and 1.7 miles down off the Appalachian Trail, and after a lovely picnic lunch of ham sandwiches at Chimney Top Picnic Area, Kyle picked the next trail to occupy our afternoon time.  He chose the Alum Cave Bluff Trail, which was listed as "easy" in the trail book - or so he claimed.  It turned out to be a moderately difficult hike that was 4.6 miles gaining an elevation of 2600 feet on the way to 6400 feet.  You meet Arch Rock, on of the parks natural arches which has a stone stairway straight up and then on to Alum Cave Bluff - a giant ledge of black slate.  You'll want to take a rest here as it is in the middle of the steepest part of the trail.  Chipmunks frolic and falcons screech and the panoramic views are tremendous.
