The most GROSS thing ever....

Warnings: Do not read this if you are easily grossed out.  Do not read this if you really love banana smoothies.  Do not read this if you don't like larvae.  Do NOT read this if you are going to think ill of my home cleanliness.

So, here it is - my latest science project.  I made a banana smoothie about 2 weeks ago to take to work for breakfast.  I drank about 3/4 of it and ended up bringing the cup back home after work.  I was on the phone with Kyle and juggling lots of "stuff" in my hands and I tipped the cup causing old banana smoothie to slosh onto the floor creating sticky, hard carpet.  I tossed the cup into the sink and cleaned up the mess.  By tossed the cup in the sink I mean, "I have been so crazy busy that it sat in there for a while."  I transferred the cup to the dishwasher at some point.  And by "at some point," I mean it was probably a while.  I was gone to Stillwater for 3.5 days for continuing education and a visit.  I have been studying for the final portion of my state board exam in Austin next week.  I was a little delayed in starting the dishwasher.  I unloaded it today right before I went and got a much, much needed haircut and right after I got my oil changed in the Blue Rocket.  Let's just say that there were little specks that wouldn't wash off.  I took a closer look and it was a plethora of fruit fly larvae all stuck inside the cup.  They had been feasting on the rancid banana smoothie left in there.

Here's what I'm wondering.   Will they be dessicated by the heat from the dishwasher?  I put them outside on the patio in the cup and I'm doing a science project to see if they will indeed hatch out or if the dishwasher heat killed them.  This could be a huge breakthrough.  This could win me the Noble Prize.  We can coerce all the fruit flies constantly irritating us into the dishwasher with banana mix and run it on hot.  No more Drosophila melanogaster.  Heh heh.

Maybe it will just sterilize them and we can eradicate like the screwworm population.

I think I'd better go read statutes.
