Inspiring Literary Ideas (aka currently reading...)

I have begun my journey into "The Anthropology of Turquoise: Reflections on Desert, Sea, Stone, and Sky," by Ellen Meloy and also into my Roth IRA (but that is a topic for another time - like when my used-to-be stockbroker boyfriend yet again explains plan A, plan B, and plan C to me). The Pulitzer Prize finalist book opens by reveling in the definition, both physical and perceptive, of color. It expands into color in the desert Southwest. The text is rich with imagery, painting a picture in the reader's mind of color in different scenarios.

First impressions:
1. Love the quotes at the beginning of every chapter. The first is, "Words begin as description. They are prismatic, vehicles of hidden, deeper shades of thought. You can hold them up at different angles until the light bursts through in an unexpected color." - Susan Brind Morrow "The Names of Things"

You have to read that one twice. Deep, man. Deep.

2. I like the references to science. I'm a scientist. I like science. I like it when authors refer to science. It makes me happy.

3. Turquoise is my favorite color and I love seeing that tube of turquoise oil paint on the front cover. Whatever did I do with all my oil paints? This reminds me that I have an awesome and colorful blue, orange, yellow, and hot pink 5' canvas painting of lilies among other things to get started on for my patio.

4. Word origins. I love it when she tells me where the word for a certain color comes from..like ochre, amethyst, and topaz. I love words, and roots and I love to put them together.

5. After the first chapter the plot has yet to arrive. Is this just a book about random musing on color? Does the author have a mental destination in mind? I shall give it more time, meanwhile focusing on that lovely little tube of turquoise oil paint on the front cover.

6. I'm really sorry that her brother died.

7. I like rock. That's all for today folks.

  1. I love that color on the cover! Don't know if I'm up to reading random musings on a color but the title is interesting, (at least more so than reading about an IRA). I've been daydreaming about painting our blue accent wall in our living room a turquoise or robin's egg blue color. Just sounds beautiful. Have a great day!

  2. Oh! I think you should paint it turquoise! And the second chapter of the book is quite the opposite of the first -- shockingly so!
